Cecil Stushnoff was born on August 12, 1940. He earned his B.S.A. in 1963 and his M.Sc. in 1964 from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. In 1967, he earned his Ph.D. in botany and pomology (science of fruit and nut production) from Rutgers University. During the 1870s and 1880s, courses in horticulture were taught as a part of the agriculture curriculum at the University, and research in horticultural variety testing began at the Agricultural Experiment Station in the 1880s. 1962, the Department's name was changed to Department of Horticultural Science.
