John Sargent Pillsbury was born in Sutton, New Hampshire, and came to the village of St. Anthony MN in 1855 to open a hardware business. 15 years later, he began his flour milling enterprise, which became one of the largest in the world. Cyrus Northrop, second president of the University of Minnesota (1884-1911), was born in Ridgefield, Connecticut on September 30, 1834. He received a common-school and academic education in his native town, and spent one year in Williston Seminary in Easthampton, Massachusetts.
