Robert Leon Jones was born on September 6, 1921 in Halstead, Kansas. He earned his B.A. in journalism in 1942 from the University of Wichita, his M.A. in psychology in 1947 and his Ph.D. in psychology and journalism in 1951 from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Jones joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota as an instructor in psychology in 1947.
