Elizabeth "Betty" Thomas Girling was born in 1917 in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. She earned her B.A. in 1940, B.S. in 1947 and her M.S. in education in 1948, all from the University of Minnesota. Girling joined the staff of the University of Minnesota's KUOM radio station in 1940 as an administrative fellow.
