Thomas Frederick Barnhart was born on 26 October 1902 in Shohomish, Washington. He earned his B.A. from the University of Washington in 1930 and his M.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1937. He was employed as a staff member and editor of newspapers in Washington, including the Seattle Times and the Everett Daily Herald .
