Henry Hopkins Wade was born on 13 June 1894 in Hopkins, Minnesota. He earned his engineer of mines degree from the University of Minnesota in 1915. Upon completing his degree, Wade became a metallurgist at the Mines Experiment Station (1915-1948). He became assistant director of the station in 1948 and director in 1951. The Mines Experiment Station was established by the Minnesota Legislature in 1911 to promote the development and conservation of the mineral resources of the state.
