The collection includes Heckman's speeches, professional correspondence, and working files from his agency, foundation, and voluntary activities, reflecting his involvement in national professional associations, and in St. Paul civic affiars. Heckman's interest in social policy issues, such as the delivery and management of health care services, education, corrections, and family relief are well-documented. Also included are surveys Heckman conducted in the 1930s and 1940s of community chests and family service agencies.

Aldred Arthur Heckman (1905-1994) was a family service, public welfare, and foundation administrator. After brief employment at the Cleveland Associated Charities, he became executive director of the St. Paul United Charities (later to become Family Service of St. Paul) from 1931 until 1952. He then became executive director of the Hill Family Foundation, later known as the Northwest Area Foundation, and helped to establish the Jerome and Groot Foundations.
