The Pioneer Press Building (now known as the Pioneer Building) was designed by architect Solon Beman of Chicago. It was erected in downtown St. Paul in 1888-1889 to house the offices and presses of the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper. Cass Gilbert was born on November 24, 1859, in Zanesville, Ohio, the son of General and Mrs. Samuel Augustus Gilbert. He received his education at MacAlester College, St. Paul, Minnesota and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge after working in a St. Paul architect's office. The Old Federal Courts Building was designed and built between 1892 and 1902. The structure was designed by Willoughby Edbrooke and James Knox Taylor in their capacities as Supervising Architect of the Treasury. Until its closing in 1969, it housed several Federal courts, the Post Office and other offices.
