The collection contains production material for fifty-eight titles published between 1951 and 1991, with the earliest material for some adult titles that Margot Tomes illustrated. The collection includes illustrations done in a variety of media, many with separations and/or overlays, miscellaneous overlays and separations, studies, dummies, paste-ups, proofs, layouts, and photocopies. There is also production material for stories published in various issues of Cricket magazine, and some miscellaneous art work for unpublished and/or unidentified titles, clippings, and a very small amount of correspondence.

Margot Tomes was born August 10, 1917 in Yonkers, New York. She attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and early in her career worked as a fabric designer. She began illustrating books in the 1950s, mainly works for adults including mysteries and cook books. In 1963 she illustrated her first book for children, The Brave Balloon of Benjamin Buckley.
