On September 7, 1908, Paul Eugene Brown was born in Norwalk, Ohio. His father, Lester, was employed by the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad. The Browns moved to Massillon, Ohio when Paul was nine. He played varsity quarterback for the Washington High School Tigers, graduating in 1926. Having first attended Ohio State University, Brown transferred to Miami University in 1928.
