Thomas Sackville, Baron Buckhurst, as the Queen's personal envoy, was sent to France in February 1571 to negotiate a marriage between Elizabeth I and Henry, Duke of Anjou (later Henry III, King of France). In August of that year Buckhurst accompanied the French envoy Paul de Foix to England to further the marriage negotiations.
