Wood was born on 21 August 1932 in Syracuse, NY. He earned a bachelor of arts in 1954 from Cornell University then spent two years in the army. In 1966 he received a masters of divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary and, in 1973, completed a masters in sacred theology and Old Testament at Nashota House Seminary in Nashota, Wi.
