Thomas Stearns Eliot (1888-1965), a poet, critic, editor, and playwright, was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He received a B. A. in 1909 and an M. A. in 1910 from Harvard, where he also pursued a doctoral degree in philosophy. In 1915, he married Vivienne (Vivien) Haigh-Wood. Vernon Phillips Watkins was born in Wales, and lived nearly his entire life near Swansea. He had written poetry since his youth, and attended Cambridge University for one year before leaving, ultimately taking a job with Lloyd's bank as a clerk.
