Seamus Heaney, poet, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in April 1939, the eldest of nine children. His father owned and worked a small farm in County Derry in Northern Ireland. Thom Gunn was born in Gravesend, Kent, England, in 1929. His first book of poems, "Fighting Terms," was published in 1954, and Gunn was awarded a creative writing fellowship at Stanford University in the same year. From 1958 to 1966 and 1973 to 1990 he taught at the University of California, Berkeley.
