James Vincent Forrestal (February 15, 1892 – May 22, 1949) was the last Cabinet-level United States Secretary of the Navy and the first United States Secretary of Defense. John L. Sullivan was born on June 16, 1899 in Manchester, New Hampshire. In 1918 he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, in 1921 he received a B.A. from Dartmouth College, and in 1924 he received an LL.B. from Harvard Law School. In 1929 he was elected Solicitor, Hillsborough County, Maine, and in 1937 he served as Commander of the New Hampshire Department of the American Legion.
