Part 1, on the U.S. Marine Corps conquest of Iwo Jima. The 4th and 5th Divs. land. Shows aerial views of the island. Navy planes return to aircraft carriers and one plunges into the ocean. Supplies are loaded on the beachhead and wounded are removed. Japanese prisoners of war are taken aboard ship. Sec. of Navy Forrestal looks on as the wounded are cared for. Tanks attack Japanese pillboxes. Flashbacks show the U.S. conquest of Tarawa.

James Vincent Forrestal (February 15, 1892 – May 22, 1949) was the last Cabinet-level United States Secretary of the Navy and the first United States Secretary of Defense. Forrestal came from a very strict middle class Irish Catholic family. He was a successful financier on Wall Street before becoming Undersecretary of the Navy in 1940, shortly before the United States entered the Second World War.
