On freedom in Austria. Interspersed throughout are scenes from Beethoven's opera Fidelio as performed at the reopening of the Vienna State Opera on Nov. 5, 1955. Includes views of Vienna and of the Austrian countryside. Shows Beethoven's home and country estate. Still pictures show Beethoven at work. Motion picture scenes show Napoleon leading Fr. troops into Austria, Fr. troops in Vienna and in Beethoven's home, and the wedding which united Austria and started the house of Hapsburg. Flashbacks show Austrian Emp. Franz Josef, Archduke Karl, couples waltzing in the Royal Palace, Archduke Franz Ferdinand's body being taken ashore in Trieste in 1914, Austrians fighting Serbians in WW I, rioters in Vienna in 1918, Nazis passing out propaganda, Nazi radio broadcasts, Ger. troops marching through Vienna after the 1938 Anschluss, and Hitler saluting cheering crowds. Shows St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hapsburg crypt, Austrian castles and numerous suits of armor. Russ. and U.S. soldiers salute each other in Vienna. Shows the bomb wrecked opera house in 1945 and scenes of its rebuilding. V. Molotov, J.F. Dulles, Brit. P.M. MacMillan, Fr. Premier Pinay, Chancellor Rabb, and others sign the Austrian Independence Treaty in May, 1955. Returning Aust. prisoners of war detrain. Shows Vienna's amusement park.
