Melvin Robert Laird (b. 1922) was a U.S. Representative from Wisconsin, January 3, 1953 to his resignation on January 21, 1969 to become Secretary of Defense. He served as Secretary of Defense from 1969 until January 29, 1973. He was domestic advisor to President Nixon from 1973 to 1974, and after 1974 he served as senior counsellor for national and international affairs for the Reader's Digest Association.
