Lady Bird Johnson was born Claudia Alta Taylor in Karnack, Texas on December 22, 1912. Her parents were Thomas Jefferson Taylor and Minnie Pattillo Taylor, and she had two older brothers, Tommy and Tony. Her mother died when she was only five years old, and her Aunt Effie Pattillo moved to Karnack to look after her. Jack Joseph Valenti (b. 1921) was an advertising and public relations executive who served as Special Assistant to President Lyndon B. Johnson from 1963 to 1966. Jim Bishop began his career in 1929 as a Ne York News copy boy. He became an author and journalist. His most significant publications were written while he worked as a columnist with the King Features Syndicate. He received an honorary degree from St. Bonaventure University in 1958. Elizabeth Sutherland Carpenter (b. 1920) operated the Carpenter News Bureau with her husband, Leslie Carpenter, representing national newspapers from 1945 to 1961. She was an executive assistant to Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson from 1961 to 1963, and she was Press Secretary and Staff Director for Lady Bird Johnson from 1963 to 1969.
