Robert William Cavenaugh was born November 18, 1904, in Cleveland, Ohio. He received his commission as ensign in the U.S. Navy in June 3, 1926, and advanced through ranks to rear admiral on July 1, 1954. He served as commander of Destroyer Squadron Five from December 1948 to January 1950, and as Commandant, Fourth Naval District from 1961 to 1965. Cavenaugh died April 3, 1995, in Bethesda, Maryland.
