Sherwoode Ayerst Taffinder was born March 18, 1884, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He received his commission as Ensign in the U.S. Navy, and advanced to the rank of rear admiral in 1940. He was appointed commander of Cruiser Division 5, Pacific Fleet in 1941, and retired as vice admiral in 1947. Taffinder died on January 25, 1965. From the description of Taffinder, Sherwoode A. Henry Tocitus Burgin (1882-1958) was born in North Middletown, New York. After graduating from West Point in 1905, he commissioned with the Artillery. From 1913 to 1915, he served in the Philippine Islands. In 1918 he was ordnance officer with the 41st Division of the American Expeditionary Forces. He graduated from Command and General Staff School in 1922 and the Army War College the following year.
