1937-1944

This series consists of information pertaining to federally financed public works and other programs that Congressman Lyndon B. Johnson obtained for the Tenth Congressional District in Texas and includes correspondence, memorandums, maps, blueprints, reports, data, statistics, leases, drawings, photographs, contracts, clippings, press releases, brochures, payrolls, and legislation. These files pertain to projects undertaken for the construction of dams for flood control by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) and the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA), Texas River Projects, and for the construction and operation of electric cooperatives such as the Lower Colorado River Electric Cooperative (LCREC) and the Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC). The dam projects were funded by grants from the Public Works Administration (PWA), while the LCRA purchased power facilities from Texas Power and Light (TP&L) and began the production and sale of public electric power with financial assistance from the Rural Electrification Administration (REA). Additional project files cover the National Youth Administration (NYA) activities, the National Defense Aviation Board of Texas, construction of the Austin magnesium plant, and the construction of an army camp at Bastrop, Texas. This series includes correspondence between Johnson and people such as George Brown, Herman Brown, John B. Connally, Arthur "Tex" Goldschmidt, M. G. Hyltin, Max Starcke, and Alvin J. Wirtz.
