Eugene Parks Wilkinson was born August 10, 1918, in Long Beach, California. He received his commission as Ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1940, and advanced to the rank of vice admiral in 1970. Robert Joseph Friedman (1913-2003) was born at Bethpage, Long Island, New York, where he attended local schools before entering the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, from which he received a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering in 1936.
