Nguyãen Cao Ky was born on September 8, 1930 in Son Tay, Vietnam. He was flight trained by the French, and returned to Vietnam in 1954 to hold a series of commands in the South Vietnamese air force. He was involved in the overthrow of President Diem, and was later appointed to the air force command.
