Born on July 22, 1923 in Russell, Kansas, the second of four children. In 1942, joined the Army's Enlisted Reserve Corps to fight in World War II. Became a second lieutenant in the Army's 10th Mountain Division. Charles Wendell Colson (b. 1931) was an assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy from 1955 to 1956, and administrative assistant to Senator Leverett Saltonstaff in the U.S. Senate, from 1956 to 1961.
