Curtis Emerson LeMay (November 15, 1906 – October 1, 1990) was an American Air Force general who implemented an effective but controversial strategic bombing campaign in the Pacific theater of World War II. He later served as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1965. Walter Campbell Sweeney (1909-1965) was born in Wheeling, West Virginia. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in June, 1930. He graduated from primary and advanced flight schools in 1935, and was assigned to the 8th Attack Squadron of the 3rd Attack Group at Barksdale Field, Louisiana. Paul DeWitt Adams (1906-1987), born in Heflin, Alabama, was commissioned to the infantry from West Point in 1928. He served with the 34th Infantry and 8th Infantry Division.
