John W. Carpenter (1916-1996) was born in Starkville, Mississippi. He graduated from high school in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and later studied engineering at Oklahoma A&M and Mississippi State College. He entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1935, and graduated with a bachelor''s degree in military science in 1939.
