Donald Norton Yates (1909-1993) was born in Bangor, Maine, and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1931. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Cavalry following graduation. He received his flight training at the Air Corps Flying School at Kelly Field, Texas.
