Summary: Air show honoring the 50th anniversary of powered flight, Kill Devil Hill, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, 17 December 1953. (Shot list to follow.) Reel 1: MS Billy Parker's pusher-type aircraft, being manually pushed backwards, crowd in fg. 2) MS same scene description, still photographers taking pictures of Billy Parker. 3) CU men strapping Mr. Parker into the aircraft. 4) MS panning to the right with the takeoff of pusher aircraft. 5) MS crowd observing the air show (scene has reflection in same). 6) MS Gen. Doolittle speaking, crowd in bg. 7) CU crowd as they observe air show. 8) Several views of various unidentified speakers. 9) CU group of scouts watching air show. 10) CU memorial on Kill Devil Hill -- camera pans to top. 11) High angle shot down on valley showing cars on road, in far bg helicopters in flight, possibly H-13's. 12) MS refreshment stands sponsored by the Kitty Hawk Methodist Church. 13) CU of plaque inscribed, THE FIRST FLIGHT FROM A 60 FOOT WOODEN TRACK LAID ON THESE SANDS, ORVILLE WRIGHT ROSE THROUGH THE WIND ON THE MORNING OF DECEMBER 17, 1903. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY THAT A MACHINE CARRYING A MAN HAD RAISED ITSELF BY ITS OWN POWER INTO THE AIR FOR FLIGHT. IT SAILED FORWARD WITHOUT REDUCTION IN SPEED AND FINALLY lANDED AT A POINT AS HIGH AS THAT FROM WHICH IT STARTED. FLIGHT LASTED ABOUT 12 SECONDS. 14) MS H-19 flying around memorial. THE MACHINE DESIGNED AND BUILT BY WILBUR WRIGHT AND ORVILLE WRIGHT. THIS TABLET WAS ERECTED EY THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICAL ASSOCIATION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, DECEMBER 17, l928, TO COMMEMORATE THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THIS EVENT. 10) CU written on monument, END OF FIRST FLIGHT, TIME: 12 SECONDS, DISTANCE: 120 FEET, DECEMBER 17, 1903. James Harold "Jimmy" Doolittle (December 14, 1896 – September 27, 1993) was an American military general and aviation pioneer who received the Medal of Honor for his daring raids on Japan during World War II. He also made early coast-to-coast flights, won many flying races, and helped develop instrument flying.
