This is a transcript of an oral history interview with Carter L. Burgess. Burgess began the interview with a discussion of his service during World War II, including his work for the Combined Chiefs of Staff, his service as aide to General Walter Bedell Smith, his service as Assistant Secretary to the General Staff at Allied Force Headquarters, and his work as Secretary of the General Staff at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force. He also talked about his appointment as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower, the 1956 election, his allegiance to the Democratic Party, and Dwight D. Eisenhower as President. Additional individuals discussed in the interview include Charles Wilson, John Foster Dulles, Sherman Adams, Richard M. Nixon, and Alfred M. Gruenther.
