1963-1969

This series consists of the files created by Governor John Connally and his personal staff, as well as the files from some of the Governor's committees. They cover the six years of John Connally's three terms as Governor of the State of Texas from January 1963 to January 1969. The series contains material generated by the Governor's office, state agencies, and the public. It includes multiple subseries including several maintained by the Governor's Central File Room. This material pertains to a broad range of topics including political activities; public affairs; speeches; Connally's schedule; the Governor's powers and duties; bills before the Texas legislature, resolutions, and executive orders; judicial concerns; hospitals and special schools; state agencies; agencies of public instruction including education; the state economy; the state budget; humanities and science; fairs, including Hemisfair; public welfare, conferences, including national and regional Governors' Conferences; social problems and change; and legal advice. Also included in this series is information regarding activities related to Texas government at the local, federal, and international levels, legislative matters, appointments, pardons, and many other matters pertaining to Connally's service as governor of Texas. One subseries deals with events preceding and following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963. It covers plans and preparations made for the President's visit to Texas, the tragedy itself, the immediate aftermath, and the period of Governor Connally's recovery from the wound he received while riding with President Kennedy in the Dallas motorcade. Several subseries include material related to the mass shooting carried out by Charles Whitman from the Tower on the University of Texas campus in Austin, Texas, on August 1, 1966. This series also contains correspondence concerning fraternal and public service organizations and includes correspondence offering the Governor honorary memberships. The series also contains visitors' registers, Christmas cards, records related to the Governor's Committee on Education Beyond the High School, records from the Governor's Division of Planning Coordination, records related to the Governor's Committee on Aging, material covering Connally's 1962 campaign for governor, and information on the governor's mansion. Separate files maintained by aides and other staff members from Connally's administration are also found in this series. These individuals include Howard V. Rose, Larry E. Temple, John Mobley, Francis (Frank) A. Miskell, George Christian, William (Bill) O. Stinson, Michael (Mike) A. Myers, William (Bill) F. Carter, Terrell Blodgett, Joe G. Moore Jr., Charles W. Croslin, Nickolas (Nick) O. Johnson, Joan C. Kennedy, Mary Nell Carlson, Sue Flanagan, David Spurgin, and Wayne Gibbens. The series consists of correspondence, memorandums, reports, lists, invitations, schedules and itineraries, speeches, press releases issued by the Governor's Press Office, press conference transcripts, publications, newspaper clippings, publicity materials.
