Charles Augustus Lindbergh (February 4, 1902 – August 26, 1974) was an American aviator, military officer, author, inventor, and activist. At the age of 25 in 1927, he went from obscurity as a U.S. Air Mail pilot to instantaneous world fame by winning the Orteig Prize for making a nonstop flight from New York City to Paris. William Woodward Outerbridge was born on April 14, 1906. He served as the Commanding Officer of the destroyer U.S.S. Ward in 1941; Commanding Officer of the destroyer U.S.S. Cummings, 1941 to 1942; Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. O'Brien, 1943 to 1945; and Commander of Destroyer Division 42, 1945 to 1956. He died in September 1986.
