Hendrik Hertzberg was born on July 23, 1943 in New York, New York. He received an A.B. from Harvard University in 1965. He worked as a correspondent for Newsweek in San Francisco from 1966 to 1967, then served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1969. From 1969 to 1977 he was a staff writer for The New Yorker. He was a speech writer in the Carter White House from February 14, 1977 to the end of the administration in 1981.
