Everett Frederic Morrow (1909-1994) was the grandson of an ex–slave and the first African-American to serve on the White House staff. He fought for justice and racial equality for African-Americans at a time when segregation and discrimination were accepted by many Americans as normal. Morrow's presence in the Commerce Department in 1953 paved the way for Ronald Brown who followed 40 years later to become Secretary of Commerce.
