Elias Howe (b. July 9, 1819, Spencer, MA–d. October 3, 1867, Brooklyn, NY) began his career as an apprentice in textile factory in Lowell, MA before working as a mechanic with carding machinery He then apprenticed with master mechanic Ari Davis and it was there he began to work on his sewing machine.
