She received a B.A. from Trinity College in 1950, and worked as a secretary, personnel consultant and adoption case worker in Chicago from 1950 to 1955. She was a teacher at the Singapore American School in 1956, an instructor at Nanyang University in Singapore in 1957, and editor of a Singapore American newspaper from 1957 to 1962.
