John William (Jack) Carter is the eldest son of President and Mrs. Carter. He was born on July 3, 1947, at Portsmouth, Virginia, during President Carter's naval service in Virginia. The family returned to Plains, Georgia, in 1953 after the death of President Carter's father. Jack remained at home until he began attending university.
