William Munford Tuck was born 28 September 1896 in Halifax County, Virginia, to William Robert James Tuck (1863-1930) and Virginia Susan Fitts Tuck (1860-1909). He was the grandson of the William Munford Tuck (1832-1899) of the biographical sketch he wrote. Tuck attended the College of William and Mary, but left to enlist in the United States Marine Corps during World War I.
