This series consists of manuscripts and accompanying documentation for Theodore White's published books. The books included are: "Thunder Out of China," a book about China in World War II; "The Stilwell Papers," memoirs of Joseph Stilwell, edited by White ; "Fire in the Ashes: Europe in Mid-Century"; "The Mountain Road," a fictional book about World War II; "The View from the Fortieth Floor"; "The Making of the President" (1960, 1964, 1968, 1972), which documents the presidential campaigns and elections of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Barry Goldwater, George S. McGovern, and Richard Nixon; "America In Search of Itself"; and "Breach of Faith: The Fall of Richard Nixon," documenting Nixon's impending impeachment and Watergate. The manuscripts for each book generally consist of theme and outline notes in handwritten or typed format; one or more typescript drafts, a setting typescript and proofs. All the manuscripts have been extensively annotated by the author. In some cases, many typescript drafts exist for a particular book. There is also considerable correspondence between White and his publishers and research material collected by Theodore White for use in the "Making of the President" books. Material consists of press releases and reports, and candidate and event information pertaining to the Presidential election. Some of the material pertains to specific chapters from the book and others are in subject files. Also included in the papers are materials relating to four documentaries for television produced by David Wolper. These were adapted from the following books: "Thunder out of China" (retitled "China: The Roots of Madness" that was later published in book format); "Making of the President, 1960"; "Making of the President, 1964"; and "Making of the President, 1968."
