1886 - 1897

This series contains black and white photographic prints and photomechanical reproductions intended for use in publications, and galley proofs. Many of the images in this series were published in Robert E. Peary's two volume autobiography, Northward Over The "Great Ice," which chronicles his quest to reach the North Pole. Included in the series are photographs of Peary, including an 1891 picture of him in his naval uniform, (XP-XPP-1-1) and an 1891 picture of Peary's wife, Mrs. Josephine Diebitsch Peary (XP-XPP-2-1). Mrs. Peary is also shown leaning on a building in another photograph. The caption for the photograph reads "the last look at the departing sun (Oct. 25, 1893). Sun does not return until February 14, 1894" (XP-XPP-26-5). There is also a souvenir booklet with a view of the Falcon among the records (XP-XPP-3-3). The Falcon was used to transport Peary and his fellow explorers on the 1893 North Greenland expedition. Also of note is a photograph of President Theodore Roosevelt shaking hands with Peary (XP-XPP--28-2). The image may have been taken when Peary visited the president at his Oyster Bay, New York home en route to the Arctic. The majority of pictures in the series are images of Eskimo men, women, and children (XP-XPP-26-20). One of the Eskimo women shown is identified as "Miss Bill," who was Peary's daughter's nurse (XP-XPP-26-26 and XP-XPP-26-27). There are several photographs of Eskimo men kayaking (401-XPP-7-2 and 401-XPP-26-1), and Eskimo women making a harpoon line (XP-XPP-18-17 and -18-18) and braiding a bowstring (XP-XPP-18-20). There are also images of glaciers, icebergs, scientific equipment, wildlife, and Arctic dwellings.
