This series consists of views of memorials and ceremonies to commemorate the achievements of the artic explorer, Adm. Robert E. Peary. Included are views of an exhibit of Peary's awards at the Smithsonian in 1911 (folder 1), the launching of the destroyer USS Peary in 1920, christened by his daughter Marie Peary (folder 2), the Peary Monument in his hometown of Cresson, PA (folder 5), the Peary Monument in Cape York, Greenland (folder 8), and anniversary ceremonies at Peary's memorial at Arlington National Cemetery (folders 7, 9 to 12, and 14). Other photographs of interest in this series include President Franklin Roosevelt departing from the Pullman car "Peary" in 1934 (XP-XPH-18-10), a 1906 portrait of Peary (XP-XPH-18-5), and a copy of a check signed by Peary (XP-XPH-18-2).

Robert Edwin Peary Sr. (born May 6, 1856, Cresson, Pennsylvania – died February 20, 1920, Washington, D.C.) was an American explorer and United States Navy officer who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for claiming to have reached the geographic North Pole with his expedition on April 6, 1909. Though born in Pennsylvania, Peary grew up in in Portland, Maine.
