Ernst Halberstadt (1910-1987) was born in Germany. He graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and later worked on murals at Radio City Music Hall, and with Diego Rivera in Detroit. He worked as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) supervisor and documented the slums in Boston in the 1930s. He also worked as a commercial photographer.
