This file unit contains letters of credence and recall for consuls as well as announcements of births, deaths, marriages and accessions. Also included are letters from ministers of foreign affairs to U.S. Secretaries of State. Of interest is a letter from the Council of Castille to President Thomas Jefferson asking for the United States to act as a mediator with the Emperor of France to obtain the liberation of Ferdinand VII. Also included is a letter from Queen Isabella to President Andrew Johnson protesting the rebellion of her subjects, her dethronement and subsequent exile.
