Hamilton Smith Hawkins (1872-1950) was born in the Dakota Territory. He received his commission in the 4th Cavalry from West Point in 1894 and served as Chief of Staff of the 35th Division at Meuse-Argone during World War I. From 1934 to 1936, he commanded the 1st Cavalry Division. He first retired from Army service in September 1936, but was recalled to active duty during World War II. He retired again in November 1943.
