This series consists of Robert E. Peary's papers relating to his work as a civil engineer with the United States Navy. It contains papers related to the Key West dock construction; papers related to the Washington, D.C. Navy Yard; papers related to the Coasters Harbor Island, Rhode Island light house and dock construction; papers related to the New York and Norfolk Navy Yard dock construction; papers related to the League Island, Pennsylvania barracks improvements; papers related to the rank of civil engineers; general specifications for dock construction and civil engineer instrument catalogs; and various administrative papers relating to service in the U.S. Navy. Included are research, notes and draft reports on the construction of canals, dry docks and timber docks; specifications and plans for the construction of navy barracks, dry and timber docks; reports and photographs of foreign barracks construction; congressional papers for Corps of Civil Engineer hearings; copies of laws and regulations related to the Corps of Civil Engineers; final reports for the cost of construction for League Island, New York, and Norfolk; and regulations, general orders, orders and circulars of the Navy.

Robert Edwin Peary Sr. (born May 6, 1856, Cresson, Pennsylvania – died February 20, 1920, Washington, D.C.) was an American explorer and United States Navy officer who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for claiming to have reached the geographic North Pole with his expedition on April 6, 1909. Though born in Pennsylvania, Peary grew up in in Portland, Maine.
