Ralph E. Haines (1883-1976) was born in Vinton, Iowa. He received his commission in the Coast Artillery Corps in 1910, and later commanded the 70th Coast Artlillery from 1938 to 1941. He commanded the harbor defenses of at Narrangansett Bay, then at San Francisco from September 1942 until his ritrement in August 1945. James Dyce Alger (b. Mar. 25, 191-d. May 27. 1986), was a three-star general in the U.S. Army. Also known as "Gentleman Jim", he played a significant role in the Battle for Kasserine Pass (Tunisia) in 1943 as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 2nd Battalion, 1st Armored Regiment.
