Summary: View over heads of newsmen as Gen Matthew B. Ridgway, SACEUR, speaks to members of the press in SHAPE Headquarters. Ridgway wishes the newsmen a happy new year and lauds the free press as an important democratic institution. Wearing gasses he tells them that one of SHAPE's objectives is to back political negotiations with the type of force the enemy can readily recognize. He states further that no substantial disagreement exists with NATO; that NATO is conscious of the current financial, political, economic and social problems. Newsmen prepare to ask questions.
