NATO publicity director Theodore Newton introduces Gen Matthew R. Ridgway, SACEUR, seen seated with Adm Lord Louis Mountbatten and Adm Robert B. Carney, USN, at press conference. Ridgway expresses pleasure at attending the NATO Ministerial Council Meeting where Mountbatten was recommended to assume command of the Mediterranean Fleet. He introduces Mountbatten who says that Carney has an efficient staff already in command and therefore assuming command will be easy and pleasant. Ridgway explains to the newsmen the command structure of SACEUR, reveals that there is one command for north, three for Center, one for South and one for the Mediterranean. General Matthew Bunker Ridgway (March 3, 1895 – July 26, 1993) was a senior officer in the United States Army, who served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (1952–1953) and the 19th Chief of Staff of the United States Army (1953–1955).
