Lewis Hanchett Butler was born in April 1927, the son of Lewis W. Butler and Sheana W. Butler. He received his A.B., Bachelor of Laws degree from Princeton University, in Princeton, New Jersey and his Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School, in Stanford, California. He was admitted to the State Bar of California on January 17, 1952.
