Brig Gen J.L. Holman greets Gen J. Lawton Collins, other military and civilian personages leaving rain at RR station. Army Secy Frank Pace, Jr. stands by Holman. They enter train; arrive at Aberdeen Proving grounds. LSs, spectators seated in the stands; Pace walks to lectern to speak; spectators seated on control tower stand; Collins and other in stands. LHSs, RV, tank fires; smoke on target area in distance. Tanks drive in demonstration area; a tank fires; Large gun (possibly 240mm How) is towed by prime mover followed by two self-propelled guns of similar caliber. 280mm gun moved by its special transporters and followed by convoy of trucks drives in area. Pan from the 2180mm gun moving on road to other vehicles following. Seq: LHSs, transporting units leave the 280mm gun which is set up in firing area. The gun is fired. View of man pulling lanyard. LS, three tanks drive on road in area. T-48 tank parked by stands in background. VS, pace and collins by 280mm gun. Collins uses gun slight as Pace, other officers stand by. Pace uses the gunsight. Men chat as they inspect the weapon. Crittenberger chats, shakes hands with a Wac officer; Collins greets the same officer, returns her salute. Dignitaries chat with each other, examine the gun and tanks. HMS, Collins and Pace look up, VS, Civilians looking at the 280mm gun and transporters.

Willis Dale Crittenberger (1890-1980) was born in Anderson, Indiana. After graduating from West Point in 1913, he commissioned in the cavalry. He graduated from Command and General Staff School in 1925 and the Army War College in 1930. He made brigadier general in July 1941 and major general in February 1942. During World War II, he was commanding general of the I Armored Corps, II Armored Corps, and VI Corps, between 1942 and 1945. He advanced to lieutenant general in June 1945. He served as co...
